Marriage

21 Aug
I read two stories today about marriage.

First: A newly divorced man that was feeling the empty nest syndrome, both of his children are recently in college. He and his wife had been married 20+ years, raised a family, created a home, a life and “boom” divorce. That was his word….”boom”. I think I grew sensitive to this story because Jason uses the word boom quite a bit. Nevertheless, he was feeling the sting of separation from his wife, family, home and I could not help but wonder…twenty plus years and then boom. Why now? Why after 20 years?

Is it that they want a second shot at a  new romance? The idea of falling in love again? Maybe they weren’t happy together anymore, maybe the days became monotonous. The questions are endless and it is impossible to speculate about someone else’s relationship. Even if there were clear cut answers, it would still leave me puzzled….20 plus years.

The second story is one of hardship, selfishness, love and acceptance. This story too left me puzzled.

A man that had been hard-working and very active all of his life was married to a woman that battled alcoholism, cancer, heart problems and many other things during her lifetime. Needless to say, she was not very active, spending most of her days sitting on a couch watching television. He did everything, all the chores, the grocery shopping, the laundry. Was this the woman he married? Probably not. Didn’t he want a better life? Didn’t he want some excitement in his life? Didn’t he just want to be free of this burden? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to understand why he would leave her?

And still he stood by her. He accepted her, he loved her no matter how hard it got….and he was by her bedside when she drew her last breath. She was his beloved wife. They stayed together till death do you part. Boom.

The age difference between the couples is significant. The first couple is in their forties while the latter are in their sixties. I have read and heard all sorts of reasoning regarding the divorce statistics. We live in a different time, people get caught cheating now because of the internet/emails/texting/FB, people are not meant to be in a monogamous relationship etc….Who knows. My parents are still together so are Jason’s and they did grow up in a different era. They worked hard and built a life together. When they said their vows they took them seriously and it meant something, it was more than just words. Words for my parents mean something – there is a little promise behind the words that they say.

I know because my Mom will chastise me. “Why did you tell her you were going to call her? – You won’t.” She is right. Going forward I will be more true to my word. If I RSVP yes – I go. If I say I am going to do something I will make every effort to do it. I won’t tell you that we should hang out when I know I don’t ever want to see you again. I don’t want my words to be little empty promises, I want them to count.

In three weeks, I will take a vow. I cannot forsee the future but I know in my heart that when I say the words, I will take them seriously. Afterall, a promise is a promise.

Jetsetter Stole our Honeymoon

10 Aug

We’ve been wrenching ideas around our gears for weeks now.  We actually had a honeymoon booked months ago in Grenada, but no ziplines = no go. When we saw the offer on Jetsetter to fly to this amazing all inclusive resort on Fiji, airfare included, we held our breath waiting for the offer to hit the internet.  If you’re not familiar with Jetsetter, it’s the travel portion of uber popular exclusive shopping “club”, Gilt Groupe.

An important aspect of this model is making shopping competitive by launching a limited stock of a very popular brand or trip for a limited amount of time.   Trish and I have personally bought some great items including a shirt, my new computer bag and ironically, our honeymoon swim wear and accessories etc from Gilt.  We’d assumed they were an upstanding company.

THIS IS HOW JETSETTER and GILT GROUP STOLE OUR HONEYMOON!

Trish and I were both at work on our lunch hours waiting for this offer to go live.  If it was within a specific price range, we were prepared to pull the trigger, we need a honeymoon and this one seemed incredible. The time came and we both logged on, checked the dates for the packages available, selected the dates that worked for us and purchased the trip!!  It was a bit more pricey than we’d wanted, but we went for it anyway as it was ALL INCLUSIVE.  We were both ecstatic!

FIJI HERE WE COME! The Resort, Namale Resort is owned by Tony Robbins apparently, which makes this even more amazing that they’re being so incredibly non-service minded.

….or so we thought.

We received our confirmation email, my card was charged in full for the entire package and we awaited specific airline info to make it official.  We were in paradise already.

Actually going to FIJI..Incredible!

THEN THE WORST EMAIL EVER ARRIVED:

Our Rejection and lovely up-sell from Jetsetter

Now we’re waiting for Jetsetter to figure how how to proceed.  I work for a service company, when you make a mistake, you eat it and move forward, earning praises for  being an upstanding company.  I’ve seen some great praise on twitter for service.  What Gilt is doing is now trying to shoehorn us into a 5 night vacation, paying more than we would per night otherwise..it’s pretty much a disaster for their service department/SLA/Guarantees to their customers.  EPIC FAIL

You would think a company that makes you check this box before you purchase something would try to uphold their end of the deal.

Companies make us check these..apparently it does not apply
meaningless guarantees

So, lets let them hear it!

If you have a twitter account, Please tweet the following:

What it must feel like to be a bride……….

Beach Bride

With a little over two months to go (eeeeek) I can’t wait. I am nervous and excited. Feel overwhelmed but happy. I am completely confused about what tasks should take priority in my life…stamps…emailing the cake man…paying bills. I make lists but I don’t follow them.  I read wedding blogs daily, I’m addicted. I have fallen in love with each and every bride I have seen. Each photo of a bride that is  posted reveals something else….I wonder what are they thinking…feeling? Excitement….fear….starvation? I imagine it is a frenzy of emotions that would be hard to put into words.

For my bridal prep I am now in full work-out mode – very boring. I would definitely rather be home with my fiance drinking wine and eating his delicious food. Instead I trek up and down hundreds if not thousands of stairs. It feels like thousands. And I am back to my six mile run on the beach :( I would put a happy face but the run has gotten so much harder, there are all these mini sand hills (no they are not dunes) on my trail.

Beauty regimens, workouts, dieting along with a full time job and my part-time job of planning a wedding whewh it is exhausting. BUT

I am trying to savor every moment. I only get this once. I want to take it all in, the exhaustion, the happiness, the hunger but mostly the anticipation. I can’t wait to wake-up on 9/11/10 -

About Me

1 May

I am certain that very few people read this so I feel completely comfortable writing whatever I want. I love raspberries, I love everything about them, first, they are my favorite color. I love the texture of them. I love how you can add them to cheesecake, chocolate cake and ice cream, yum. And I still eat them by placing them on the top of my fingers even though I am over 30 years old.

I DO NOT like bowling. Ick. I suck at it. I think it is weird to place my fingers in these little holes, it’s creepy for some reason. And to make matters worse you have to borrow shoes. Sometimes the shoes are still warm from someone else’s feet…gross.

I drink Brown Cow’s every single morning unless I am traveling. Now in case you are wondering what a Brown Cow is…it is Iced Coffee with a splash of chocolate milk. Yes! That’s right people! Chocolate milk! And it is Yuuuuuummmmy. The truth is we all want chocolate milk in the morning, somewhere along the way someone told us we were too old for chocolate milk and we believed them. For those of you who drink coffee like adults good for you. Joey and I are sticking to our Brown Cow’s .

I LOVE roses. There is something about roses that comforts me. I have one with me always.

I am weird with food. I don’t like wet meat. I prefer the shapes to be the same when I am eating different vegetables together in one dish. I only eat beef when it is raw. I think mixing sweetness with saltiness is a crime. I don’t eat cereal. I love bacon but I don’t like ham…it’s weird with all its colors and shiny-ness. I don’t drink soda because it makes my eyes water. The list goes on and on.

I have recently discovered the Sonic Care toothbrush and it’s orgasmic. I recommend it to everybody. The idea of having to brush my teeth with a regular toothbrush makes me sad.

If I had to choose between Chick-fil-A and dinner at Morton’s I would probably choose Chick-Fil-A. Seriously, people are lucky they are not catering our wedding because if it were up to me….

I have conversations in my head constantly. I am not sure if it is a sign of insanity or not. I feel fairly normal so I am not worried just yet.

I like rocks. Yup. I feel super lucky when I find sea glass when I am walking on the beach. I appreciate how long it took to make it smooth and smokey looking, I have a small collection.

I think Sofia Vergara is the most beautiful woman in the world and I am quite certain that Allesandra Ambrosio is not human.

I love all animals. I can’t kill bugs, it makes me sad. I had to kill a black widow the other day and it took me about an hour. I want a dog SOO badly it’s painful.

I do not like Ipods or other devices that you have to stick in your ears.I much prefer to eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. Really, it’s cheesy but I just like listening to life. BTW men gossip just as much as women do as far as I can tell.

I miss my great-grandmother, Meme, and I wish I could have a conversation with her as an adult.

I love the fact that I was born and raised in Texas. BUT I also love the fact that I live in California, the evenings here are amazing.

I have absolutely no idea of what I want to do with my life. I am madly in love with my fiance, family and friends. They all make my life so fulfilling already that when it comes down to me and what I am supposed to do…I am clueless.  XOXO

Palm Trees

30 Apr

So I woke up this morning and it is still windy. The weather in LA has been weird for days…hot…cold…windy…rainy. I feel like my eyeballs may pop out of my head at any moment from all the sinus pressure. In the midst of all this turbulent weather I wondered about all the palm trees here. Why don’t palm trees break? I mean the wind has been getting up to 70mph and nothing. Big Oaks in Texas are uprooted all the time with crazy wind. So of course, I googled it. Palm trees don’t break because they lack the secondary xylem which basically translates to…… They are bendy.  Interesting.

Wedding Planning Thus Far…

23 Mar

Planning the wedding thus far has been relatively easy. Here are things that I have learned for future brides.

1. You only need wedding magazines for your wedding dress. Get an idea of what shape you want and then the designers you like.  Buy 2 or three mags at the most. Try not to get overwhelmed.

2. To get great ideas for wedding details. Use blogs. There are hundreds, all with great ideas.

3. Once you pick a date and lockdown the venue you are home free.

4. If you are on a tight budget, enter contests. Even if you don’t win you often get discounts or other incentives.

5. Register at a place you love and pay attention the promotions.

6. Provide the florist with the vases it saves a ton of money. I love the new trend of using mason jars.

7. Try to use the concept of DIY – Do it yourself – it makes the wedding more personal.  My first DIY project were the Save the Dates. I purchased postcards from the city of my wedding, bought a custom made rubber stamp, embossing powder and an ink pad all for $100.00 and a couple hours of my time.

My second DIY project..

If you can believe it, I have been going to the beach and collecting small black sea rocks to put inside the jars with candles. It is a pain in the ass but I do it. Who knows…I am getting tired of washing the rocks.

That is all I have for now. Jason and I are taking our engagement photos on April 3rd, we won those :)

Simple Valentines Days Rule

16 Feb

At the end of Valentines, I smelled like garlic, wood smoke, wine and sweet victory.  V-tines day is regarded as a b.s. holiday in Man land for valid and varied reasons.  It comes too closely after the holidays to be fully recharged in your wallet and psyche to be ready to go all out and be the most creative, sweetest man ever.

This is a post dedicated to ruling your Valentines day with simplicity and without breaking your bank.

1.  Breakfast is under rated.  You don’t need breaky in bed or anything crazy.  ..take your lady for her favorite coffee cafe.  In our case we hit Flake for Acai bowls and coffee.  Feed her in the morning or face crankiness early on.

2.  Utilize your epic ability to wield nature in your favor.  In our case, we went on a hike on the coast (Hike, it’s free, romantic and healthy..if you live in an ill climate, move.).  The day seemed to not only be a holiday based on love, but the definitive end to winter here in southern Cali.  Having nature on my side, I felt it appropriate to claim the sky writing masterpiece overhead as my own.  Whoever paid for this, thanks for helping out :)

"My" Sky Writing gift

3.  Be nice to your lady on the hike.  It seems to be man nature, mine at least, to get a little aggressive when doing physical things with the ladies (no pun intended..c’mon!).  Be patient and nice and smile and she’s yours for the rest of the day.  This includes generous oversight of lack of gift or card.

4.  Cook Italian Food! It’s easy, delicious and lends to gregarious wine drinking, which creates romance..it’s chemistry.  Not to brag, but I can cook..probably better then you.  It’s true.  I made lasagna.  I could have slipped any bit of nasty non advantageous info into conversation and it would have sounded like “LALALALA LOOOOVE” to Trish’s ears.

chicken sausage, spinach, mushroom, homade tomatoe sauce..

Lasgna, Home made Ceasar, Delicious Vino

5.  And of course, don’t forget the candles!  Ladies love candles, a detail we tend to overlook..unless of course you’re a tea drinker essential oil type of guy..I for one haven’t been in Cali long enough to get there, but to each his own!

Happy Valentines day and enjoy the left overs.  Mine are lasagna and extra gratitude from the lady.
